Positives and negatives
The existing design is not good because of the bad placement of holes. This is due to the grain in the wood that would make it become weak when the holes are made. This is because the holes would create short grain in the wood making it very weak and vulnerable to any weight, causing the wood to break.
This design also has no vertical support for the wooden beams it is supporting resulting in the beams flexing downwards. This would put pressure on the screws that are the only thing keeping the wood from doing this.
The metal frame doesn't cover the bottom or top of the beam meaning that all the pressure is on the screws. A potential result of this would be the screws snapping as the rest of the metal body isn't supporting it.
An positive about this existing design is the strong frame on the sides of the metal joint. This is good because it would stop the beams from moving horizontally.
