Places are shaped by the factors that contribute to them. These characteristics help distinguish one place from another

Location, Locale & Sense and Perception of place
Locale
This involves thinking about a place in relation to where something happens- it is how places are shaped by people, the effects they have on it and the culture and customs within a place
Sense of place
This is the subjective and emotional attachment that people have to a place. This can be totally different from one person to another
Location
Physical site and situation of a place in terms of where it is in relation to its surroundings and other places. It is often expressed using latitude and longitude, grid references from a map or the distance and direction from another place
Perspective of place
This described the thoughts that people may have about a place, either based on their personal experience of visiting it or from what they have heard or read about it
Place, scale and Identity
One change in identity often talked about is globalisation- Global companies replacing many local, small scale businesses. Some people complain that these outlets contribute to placelessness as they are the same the world over
Glocalisation
Global companies adapting their brand to meet the need of local places. In Muslim countries McDonalds doesn't sell pork products
The identity of a place may change over time. Changes have often happened because of other events elsewhere in the world, which often caused flows of people (migration)

Belonging and wellbeing
The extent to which people feel they belong to a place is now consideration planners and developers take seriously. The transition town initiative not only boosts local identity but increases a sense of belonging and is thought to promote well-being amongst the local population
The extent of a persons belonging to an area may be influenced by a number of factors that tend to be personal characteristics such as age or socio-economic status
Different groups will perceive places and their belonging to them in different ways. This is called positionality and refers to whether a group has a sense if belonging or alienation. This links back to insider and outside ideas. People's experience of their belonging may change over time.
Well-being is an aspect of place that has become topical. Each year the Sunday Times newspaper produces a list of the places it considers the best to live in Britain
Concept and importance
-
To some people a place may be nothing more than that but for those who visit it, live there or have some other connection with it, place becomes much more important than just a location and takes on a meaning
