Assessments

Formative
Definition: evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some benchmark or standard. These are often high stakes, meaning they have a high point value.
3 Way Summaries: The idea here is to use different modes of thinking and attention to detail. Students can work in groups or individually. In response to a question or topic inquiry, they write 3 different summaries: 10-15 minute long words, 30-50 long words, 75-100 long words
Think-Pair-Share: The instructor asks a question, and students write down their answers. Students are then placed in pairs to discuss their responses. Teachers are able to move around the classroom and listen to discussions. It lets them gain valuable insight of understanding.
Interim/Benchmark

Portfolios: Student portfolios can include items that students have created and collected over a period. Another example is when students create a portfolio of their written work that shows how they have progressed from the beginning to the end of class.
Diagnostic
Definition: a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills to prior instruction. It is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning
RAN chart: Students can state what do they think they know, questions they may have, write in their wonderings about the subject, new information they have learned and have confirmed their knowledge on the topic. It is a great poster to work on through a week and to keep on the classroom wall.
Student Survey: Students complete a survey about their ideas or understandings about a certain topic.
