Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Periodic testing throughout the year. Testing shows where students are in their learning, and predicts how they will do in the future on other tests.

Diagnostic
Definition: These assessments help teachers identify performance gaps. These are given the first day or class to identify what students know and don't know, or at the beginning of a unit.

Performance
Definition: Assessments that aren't traditional questions. Students complete some sort of activity or project to be assessed. It is open-ended. There are no incorrect or correct answers.

Formative
Definition: The process of gathering evidence of student learning. Teachers use these assessments to monitor and adjust instruction. This gives the students opportunities to provide feedback to the teacher about how much they're understanding.
