Opening
- How would you describe the butterfly egg?

Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to monitor students learning by providing ongoing and instant feedback. Teachers use this to adjust instruction. They usually have no grade value.
Ex. 1- Exit tickets: There are many different versions of exit tickets, they usually only take 5 minutes to complete, are given at the end of a lesson, and are used to assess the students learning after the lesson.
Ex. 2- Polls or surveys: Class polls are a way of asking questions and instantly getting an overall idea of how many students grasp the content.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate students learning at the end of a unit, semester, or year by comparing the results with state standards.

Ex. 2- Final Project or Paper- This can be used to assess the students learning over that unit of content.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Benchmarks are a more formal style of assessment used periodically throughout the school year.
Ex. 1- Chapter Test- A test given at the end of each chapter to evaluate students learning over that chapters content.
Ex. 2- Six Weeks Test- A test given at the end of the six weeks covering the content of those weeks.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are usually given before teachers move into a new unit or at the very beginning of school. Teachers can use these results to plan lessons and differentiate.
Ex. 1- Pre Assessments- These can be given before starting a unit to see their prior knowledge on the content.

Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are whenever a student is asked to perform a task rather than answer questions on a written test.
Ex. 1- Act it Out- This is where a student is told to act out a certain event, process, scene, word, etc. They are physically showing you.
Ex. 2- Sort or Order- Having a student sort a set of cards into specific categories or order events in a story.
