Formative
Example: Thumb it! Students use their thumb to indicate their understanding of the lesson. Thumbs up means got it, sideways means kinda, and thumbs down means does not get it.
Definition: A Formative assessment is a method teachers use to determine students' comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress
Example: Exit Tickets are a great way to directly see how each student is doing. Teachers can use exit tickets to gain feedback and evidence of mastery or a need to reteach.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to asses student's content knowledge at the end of a unit.
Example: End of Unit exams, end of term exams, and state benchmarks are all given at the end of a unit or certain time period.
Example: Research projects will give teachers the opportunity to see how well the students grasped the content taught
Benchmark
Definition: Benchmark exams are given periodically throughout the year to assess students and use the data to develop a baseline achievement.

Diagnostic
Definition: Any assessment which occurs before instruction on a new unit. The results of the assessment will guide the teachers in what and how to teach

Example: Pre-assessments are given before a unit starts and help teachers know what the students know and don't know
