Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a way to check for student understanding as well as gain immediate feedback on instruction to see how effective the lesson was. Formative assessments are given to check for understanding, so they would not necessarily need to be graded, but would need to be checked in order to modify instruction if needed.
Example: Students will write a short story about what their life would be like if they were a droplet a part of the water cycle.
Example: Students will create a math word problem on a sheet of paper with their name on it. After they will crumble their paper and throw it to someone across the room. This person will solve the problem and write their name next to their answer. After the students will crumble their paper again and toss it across the room. This time the student will justify the student's answer by telling me why they are correct or why they were not correct.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment where students act out or perform a task. This assessment does not require pencil and paper.
Example: Playing charades and the students are required to act out the topic they are learning about with out speaking.
Example: Students will perform a scavenger hunt where they need to use prior knowledge in order to solve riddles and complete the hunt.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are used to see how students are performing and can show how well students will do on future exams.
Example: STAAR- a standardized test given to students to determine their knowledge and skills within their grade level.
Example: F and P benchmark assessments are designed to place students in appropriate guided reading programs.
Summative
Definition:Summative assessments are given at the end of a learning unit in order to determine how much the students have learned and retained from the unit lessons. These are usually taken as a test grade for the 6 weeks.
Example: Unit Assessment Exams: Taken at the end of a learning unit to determine how much information students retained through out the unit.
Example:Students will create a power point presentation about a topic covered in the unit. The student will give oral presentation that must follow a rubric which will hit all of the key components proving their understanding of the content.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are given in the beginning of a lesson in order to assess and activate students prior knowledge in order to determine students strengths and weaknesses . Information collected through this assessment can help the teacher plan in order to meet students needs.
Examples: Students will create a graphic organizer with the teacher. The graphic organizer will be used to see what the students are familiar with in the beginning and compare or add on to information at the end of the lesson.
Example: Students will create a KWL chart as a class. Students will talk about what they know and what they want to know before the lesson. The teacher will use this information to guide instruction through out the unit to make sure the want to knows are answered.
