Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic Assessments are pre-tests or pre-assessments. They are used to help the teacher see how much their students know and/or don't know about an upcoming topic or unit. The teacher can then use the results of the diagnostic assessments to plan for their future instruction and areas of instruction that they need to focus more or less on.
Examples:
Informal Reading Assessments: These are considered a diagnostic test because you are assessing the students reading level at the start of guided reading to see where the student falls in their ability level.
KWL: A KWL chart is a graphic organizer that gives students the chance to fill out what they know, what they want to know, and later on what they have learned about a certain topic. This is a form of a diagnostic pre-assessment tool to guide future instruction.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments is a form of testing that has students performance task to show their knowledge rather than take a multiple choice test.
Examples:
Open- Ended or Extended Response Exercise: These are questions or other responses that have students require a written or oral response to a question.
Portfolio: Portfolios are a performance based assessment because it is a collection of student work that shows off their performance-based work.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are formal assessments used to measure what students have learned at the end of a unit or defined period of instruction.
Final Exams/Midterm Exams: These assessments are used to test the student's knowledge throughout a period of time.
End of 6 weeks District Assessments: These summative assessments are given at the end of a period of time (end of the 6 weeks) and they are a test on the students knowledge of what they have learned.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments can be formal or informal that are used throughout a unit to help monitor student progress which gives teachers the chance to adjust their instruction based on the students' data.
Questioning: This is a form of a formative assessment as it informally assesses the students knowledge through questioning throughout the lesson. This gives teachers a chance to adjust their instruction during the lesson if their questioning shows that the students are not understanding.
Exit Tickets: This is an example of a formative assessment as it assesses students knowledge of a topic through a quick informal assessment. The students answer a few short questions after a lesson is finished and the teacher uses that data to see what they need to reteach or move onto.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: A benchmark/interim assessment is used to evaluate a student's learning progress which is then used/tracked to see how the student will perform on future assessments.
STAAR: This is a state mandated test that assesses the students' knowledge from the entire year in their grade level. This determines the next step on advancing up a grade.
MAP: Computerized test taken at the BOY, MOY, and EOY. It shows student achievement and knowledge in Math and Reading.
