Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.
Observation: Students can be observed during course work to evaluate and assess if the student is comprehending.
Exit Slips: Students can answer questions, write about what they have learned or ask questions if misconception occurs. This allows the teacher to assess the knowledge of the student before exiting the classroom/ transition.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments that educators use to evaluate where students are in their learning progress and determine whether they are on track to performing well on future assessments.
STARR: Texas standards require that students be tested to determine if they are on track with progress from one grade level to the next.
FMP: Students can be assessed in reading using the Fountas and Pinnel reading benchmark to keep track of reading levels.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment are used as forms of pre-assessments to determine a student's individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.
Questioning: Students are questioned using a pre-assessment to determine where their knowledge is prior to instruction.
Concept Map: Students are tasked with a graphic organizer to help organize the knowledge they already know about a subject.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessment is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
