Assessment

Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a way to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Also to help teachers identify those students who are struggling to learn.
Exit Tickets: teachers can give these to students at the end of the lesson to see what they understand. Based on the students responses the teacher can change the rest of the lesson.
Peer Assessments: Have students follow a rubric to help grade another students work and then go over it with the student. This way they both see mistakes and can help each other with the assignment.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: form of assessment that educators use to evaluate and determine where students are in their learning progress. This can be in the form of a written test to compare answers to the class as a whole, and how they have improved over the school year.
STARR: is a Texas State test that is required by all students to take. Some take different ones depending on the grade level, but it is to determine their knowledge of what they have learned throughout the year.
MAP: is a test: this test is taken online to see the progress in math and reading. This is a test to see how they have improved from previously taking it.
Summarize
Definition: used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period

End of Unit chapter test: to show that the students fully understand what was going on in the unit. And what they still need to know.
Performance
Definition: this is an assessment that requires students to act out, or move around. Rather than them sit down and take a test or a quiz.
Debates: have the students pick a side and stick with it throughout the lesson and have them debate on it. Then the next day you could have them switch, this way you have them see two sides of it.
Performance/Presentation: have them act out a scene or present what they are going over. Make it fun and interesting for the students.
Diagonostic
Definition: This is a form of a pre-assessment to determine the students strengths and weaknesses on the upcoming unit. This will give you an idea on where to start.
Running Record: these are good for the younger grades to keep in mind what reading level they are at.
KWL: this is a simple form that you can have the students fill out on what they know, want to know, and what they have learned. You can start this out as whole group then have them do it individually.
