Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments are used to monitor student work during the learning process and provide valuable data the teacher can use to assist in the planning of new lessons or units.
Exit Tickets. The teacher can chose from a variety of exit ticket assessment options dependent upon the content of the lesson. Some examples include: the students could reflect on the lesson through writing, answer a select number of questions, or have the students write three things they thought were important from the lesson.
Think-Pair-Share. Student have time to reflect, pair up with a classmate, and share their thoughts regarding the content. The teacher will assess through hearing the students thoughts and ideas
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments evaluate the students after the learning has taken place and are used to evaluate achievements

State Mandated Assessments. Tests like STAAR or the SAT that evaluate student knowledge over a broad area of content.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are less content focused and more performance focused. Where the students demonstrate their knowledge through performing a certain task
Creating an expository article. The students would research a topic and create their own expository text that includes text features.
Creating a layout for a fair using area and perimeter. Students would use their knowledge of perimeter and are to design a layout for a school fair
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to determine prior and background knowledge students have about differing content areas. These are used as pre-assessments so the teacher can use the data to alter the lesson and address misconceptions.
KWL chart. A chart that divides student thoughts into three categories: what they already know about a topic, what the have a desire to know, and finally what the learned after the lesson. Not only does it provide a diagnostic assessment, but helps students to independently come up with questions.
Pre-assessment survey. A diagnostic assessment could be as simple as providing a "what do you know" survey to the students prior to crafting the lesson. This could be done on paper or electronically through resources like googleforms
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Interim or benchmark assessments focus on determining where students are academically at certain parts of the year to determine student growth potential or needs

STAAR: A Texas standardized test that ranks students according to discern how much a student knows according to grade level standards.
