Participants
45 students from the University of Washington. Nine participants were allocated to each of the five conditions.
Results
These show that the word used in the question did alter the estimate of speed. Smashed produced a higher estimate then contacted.
Conclusions
Not only were individuals poor at estimating speed, but they were also systematically and significantly influenced by the wording of a question.
Following each clip the participants were given a questionnaire the first part of which required them to write a short account of what they had seen and secondly to answer some specific questions.
