Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is meant to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback. Instructors use this feedback to improve their teaching and improve student learning. This is a low stakes assessment, which means that they have low or no point value.
Sticky Note: Students will write one thing they learned from the lesson and paste on the classroom's KWL chart under what L for what they learned.
Circle-Triangle-Square Exit Ticket: Students will write down 1 thing that is circling their mind, 3 things they are going to remember, and something that squares with them.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. This is a high stakes assessment, which means that they have high point value.
Midterm Exam: A midterm exam covers instructional content that has been covered thus far. Usually accounts for 10% of the student's final grade, therefore, it is a high stakes assessment.
Final Project: A semester long project is a high stake assessment because the students are to be working on the project all semester long and usually will account for 10% of their final grade.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An interim assessment are periodic testing that occurs throughout the school year. For example, every six weeks or a chapter test. This is a low-level/little of no student feedback.
DRA: Developmental Reading Assessment is a test that demonstrates students' achievement and in growth in their reading and fluency with reading.
STARR: Texas standardized test given to students towards the end of the school year to assess students' knowledge learned in their grade level.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Creating a Timeline: Students will create a timeline explaining the historical events that led to the Civil War.
Open-ended Response: Questions that are given to the students which require an oral or written response.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to determine students' level of knowledge, skills, and understandings at the beginning of a course, grade level, unit and/or lesson. They are assessments that test students on what they already know.
Pre-Tests: Asssessments that are given to students before the lesson is taught to help teachers understand what students already know and how they can adjust the curriculum to meet the needs of the students.
KWL Chart: A chart based on what students know, want to know, and have learned at the end of the lesson. Students will first address what they know about the content, next what they want to learn, and lastly what they learned. This assessment is a good way to introduce new or unknown concepts.
