What are they for?
Formative assessments assess student comprehension along the way as teachers are teaching in order to enable successful future teaching.
Formative assessments are used to provide students with appropriate, high level academic feedback.

Type of formal Formative Assessment - given at specific times (after 6/9 weeks, after a chapter is covered).

Performance

Performance assessments allow a teacher to assess a student's knowledge through their creation. This form of assessment allows the student to be creative with their answers, exposing the depth (or lack thereof) of their knowledge to their teacher.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic testing is used to help a teacher better understand where a student is academically, which will in turn allow them to adjust/plan their instruction to properly fit the needs of the student.
