quantitative
things we can measure by asking questions such as by how much or by how many. for example, asking people to rate an advert in a survey by giving a score between 1-10.
an advantage of this is that there is a variety of output formats for the research, statistics can be put into tables and charts
disadvantages are that statistics can change very often and this research can go out of date very quickly compared to qualitative research
qualitative
looking at the opinions and attitudes of people and why they choose to do what they do. for example a focus group that asks the audience fro discuss their feelings about a media product
advantages are that the researcher gains an in depth understanding of the target audiences feelings and needs
disadvantages are that it doesn't allow for statistical data, and it is not easy to look at responses from very large numbers of people
