Climate change
What is climate
change?
Climate change refers to the rise
in average temperatures on earth due to the
greenhosue gases released while burning fossil fuel.
what are the impacts of climate change?text
water resources
if there is an increase in intensity of weather, periods of drought can affect the reliability of Singapore's water supply while sudden intense rainfall overwhelm drainage systems and thus leads to flash floods.
biodiversity and greenery
could affect the natural diversity of plants and animals due to
the alteration of the ecosystems natural process such as soil formation, nutrient storage and pollution absorption.
effect on public health
Singapore is situated where vector borne diseases like dengue are endemic. these diseases are observed during the warmer periods of the year. the sudden increase in temperature may also lead to more occurrences of heat stress and discomfort around sick and elderly.
urban heat island effect
urban areas tend to be warmer thus leads to heat stress as well as greater use of air conditioning, increasing Singapore's energy demands and thus results in higher domestic carbon emissions.
food security
a small increase in temperature could affect crops growing in
other countries and ours eventually as we import than than
90%of our food
what can we do to manage climate change?
individuals role
use energy wisely
•change to energy efficient light bulbs
•unplug and turn off switches when not in use
•buy household items with 5 ticks on them to save more
consume less
Spending time with loved ones is so much better than buying and consuming. Sharing, making, fixing, upcycling, repurposing and composting are good places to start to consume less.
green your commute
instead of driving a car on your own, you could carpool or use other methods of transportation that will help the environment and reduce greenhouse gases.
•ride a bike
•take public transportation
switch to electronic or hybrid vehicle
governments role
promoting international co-operation on climate change
Singapore also participates in other multilateral efforts that support a comprehensive and holistic approach to dealing with climate change
World Trade Organisation
(WTO)
, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the International Maritime Organisation
(IMO)
and the International Civil Aviation Organisation
(ICAO)
.
Singapore is a partner in key regional initiatives to
improve
peat land management and promote sustainable land use practices.
Singapore actively collaborates with countries to provide
training
to developing countries on
climate change
and
environment-related
issues.
pledge to reduce emissions
reduce emissions by 36% by 2030
Singapore joined the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) as an observer city in March 2012.
The C40 is committed to implementing meaningful and sustainable climate-related actions locally that will address global climate change.
build buildings with environmentally friendly features
price the energy appropriately
what causes climate change?
greenhouse gases
Water vapor
increases as the Earth's atmosphere warms, but so does the possibility of clouds and precipitation, making these some of the most important feedback mechanisms to the greenhouse effect.
. Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by more than a third since the Industrial Revolution began.
role of human activity
The industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels this increasing Earth's temperatures over the past 50 years.
United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.
