Assessments
Formative
-
Teacher is gathering information about student's learning during the lesson. Teachers provide feedback to help students adjust their learning.
-
Summative
-
Teachers assess student knowledge at the end of the lesson. Students can not adjust their responses.
-
Diagnostic
These assessments are given at the before at lesson unit. These are helpful for "diagnosing" what students know and do not know about a content, not yet taught. This helps the teacher to adjust her instruction to meet the needs of the students to scaffold them to their learning goal.
-
-
Performance
Performance assessments allow students the opportunity to demonstrate what they know through an activity or project. This allows the teacher to hear student thinking and see them apply knowledge gained from the lesson.
-
-
Interim/Benchmark
This is a test taken in the middle of a learning period. This test shows the teacher how students are progressing toward the learning goals. This kind of testing is an opportunity for teachers to gage how students are expected to do on the summative assessment and what objectives their students are needing intense focus on. These tests can also help prepare students for the summative assessment by their format.
