Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a large chunk of learning. These tests are taken at the end of unit or at the end of year.

Research Projects: A research project that is used to assess what the student has learned about a whole unit.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is the process of gathering evidence of students learning to receive feedback and adjust instruction strategies to enhance achievement.
Discussion: Teacher discusses lesson with students during class to assess how to adjust instruction.
Exit Slip: Students will list write the answer to a key question about what they have learned during the lesson.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are used to see how students are doing in their learning and determine if they are on aligned with their learning goals to do well on future assessments.

Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment that requires students to perform a task rather than regular tests or answering questions. It has cognitive rigor.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as pre-assessments they inform teachers of students achievement gaps and other academic abilities. This information can help teachers to plan future lessons and differentiated instruction. Not for grading purposes.
Textbook Pre Test: This test can be administered at the beginning of a unit or a course to see where students are at.
Running Records: This assessment helps teacher know how many words per minute a student is able to read.
