HOT Questioning
Opening: Based on the front cover, what do you think this story is going to be about?

Performance
Definition: an assessment in which a student must perform a task rather than answering questions on a test.
Debates: students are asked to debate about what they have just learned. Students must pick a side and have valid arguments.

Formative
Definition: a low stakes assessment used by teachers to get feedback to use to monitor and adjust instruction. Formative assessments have little to no grade value.

4 corners: a question is posed to all students at the end of a lesson and the students pick the corner that has the right answer.
Summative
Definition: a high stakes assessment used to evaluate student learning at the end of a lesson or unit. Summative assessments have a high grade value.
MAP: a beginning, middle and end of year assessment that tracks the growth of students learning in reading and math

Diagnostic
Definition: a pre-assessment used to determine the strengths, weaknesses, and misconceptions of students; knowledge. This information can also help a teacher modify or plan instruction.
Running Records: students read while teacher takes notes looking for accuracy and fluency. This record determines reading level.
KWL: an assessment strategy for the teacher to get an understanding of what students already know about a topic.

Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: an assessment that evaluates where a student is in their learning in comparison to others. This information is used to determine how a student is projected to do on further assessments.
District Assessments: usually for grades 1-2, an assessment written by the district to test students on what they have learned at the end of a 6 weeks.
Benchmark: usually for grades 3-5, an end of unit assessment to gage what students have learned for the past 6 weeks and determine what further instruction is needed for the success on STAAR.
