Formative
Definition: To monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.
Concept Map Lets the student show their understanding of the topic by creating a graphic organizer based on their comprehension.
Exit Tickets A way for the teacher to check their learning and understanding of what was taught by having them answer a short questions before exiting the classroom.

Summative
Definition: To evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Midterm Exam These are exams given in the middle of the semester to guide them in further instruction.
Essays A teacher can assign an essay to the students to have them write about a subject in a content area that they have learned that sums up their learning and comprehension.

Performance
Definition: Measures students' ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit or units of study by performing a task as opposed to tests and answering questions.
Presentation This is where a student or a group of students work to create a report of some kind. This is a good way to check for their understanding and comprehension since they are performing their learning.
Portfolios This is where a student can collect items from what they have created which is a great way to monitor progress in their work.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An assessment that evaluates learning over a period of time and determine the outcome on future assessments such as standardized or end-of-course exams.
MAP Test A computer adaptive test where each student gets their own unique set of questions that covers all subject areas.
STAAR Test A series of standardized tests used to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in their grade level that year.
Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment given at the beginning of a course or unit that is used to collect data on something that student's already have knowledge of.
Survey A form given to students to gain information and can also be used as a means to check their understanding.
Ungraded Quizzes Students can be given a quiz over a unit or a part of a unit that is informally used to just gather data.
