Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark Assessments involve a formal and periodic way of measuring student learning progress.
STAAR: The STAAR test is a state standardized exam that measures a student's knowledge of learned content in their grade level.
MOY Testing:This is a benchmark type test that measures student comprehension of TEKS. Based on the information, teachers will adjust their instruction in order to prepare students for the state standardized exam at the end of the year.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic Assessments are used to measure and determine a student's academic strengths and weaknesses. The information gathered allows teachers to adjust their instructional plans and provide students with any accommodations and modifications.
Running Records: Running records can be used to assess student reading skills and development. Student's will read aloud while teachers identify any potential error patterns. Teachers are then able to provide students with the necessary reading instruction.
Pre-Assessments: Pre-Assessments are a way for teachers to measure student prior knowledge before introducing a new unit or concept.
Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments involve measuring student understanding of content in a lesson. Based on the information gathered, teachers are able to provide students with academic feedback, as well as adjust their instructional strategies to enhance student learning. These type of assessment can be formal or informal and are low stakes.
Class Discussions: Class discussions provide opportunities for teachers to ask questions and check for student understanding. Teachers are able to provide oral feedback quickly and guide their student's thinking.
Exit Tickets: Exit tickets are done at the end of a lesson. This is a way to assess student understanding of lesson content, provide the teacher with feedback on the lesson activities, or it can also require students to apply the new skills they have learned by answering a question.
Summative
definition: Summative Assessments involve measuring student understanding of content in a unit. Based on the information gathered, teachers are able to check if students mastered the material presented during a given instructional period. These type of assessment are formal and high stakes.
Midterm Exams: Midterm exams are formal assessments that are given at the middle of an academic period. This consists of a question based test.
Final Projects: Final projects can be used to assess student learning at the end of an instructional period or unit. Students are required to explore learned content and complete a task.
Performance
definition: Performance Assessments involve measuring student understanding by having them complete a task rather than complete a test like procedure.
Journal Writing: Journal writing provides students with opportunities to promote critical thinking. Students are able to apply their knowledge of learned content by responding to question or they are able to reflect on what they have learned.
Presentations: Presentations are a way for students to show off and share their knowledge and skills in front of their class.
