Assessment
Formative
Process of gathering evidence of student learning, providing feedback, and adjusting instruction strategies to enhance achievement.
Example: Exit Ticket: Students are given one or two questions to be answered before they leave class.

Example: Class Discussion: Students partake in a class discussion about the topic. The teacher can use responses as a formative assessment
Interim/Benchmark
Periodic testing throughout the school year that shows where student learning is as compared to peers and the district.
Example: STAAR Test. This is the state standardized test in the state of Texas. It is given to show students knowledge based on the state standards.
Example: Benchmarks. This is a test given several times throughout a year to show student learning compared to the district.
Summative

Example: Final Exam. A final exam is given at the end of a semester to gauge students knowledge over everything that has been learned in the class so far.
Example: Unit Test. This test is given at the end of a unit to gauge students' knowledge over a specific group of topics.
Performance

Example: Fluency Test. Students will be observed reading ad will be graded based on the fluency of that reading.
Diagnostic
Assesses where students are with their knowledge of a new unit prior to teaching the content.This helps teachers to assess students strengths and weakness in regard to a topic.
Example: KWL Chart: KWL Charts show what students Know, Want to Know, and have Learned. This clearly charts where students are on a topic.
Example: Pre-Test. Students can be given a pre-quiz or pre-test with questions that will be on a final test showing exactly what they know.
