Formative
A formative assessment is an assessment that is used during students learning to track progress, level of achievement, and see if students are struggling with a concept. It is used during learning to modify and adapt the presentation of content as needed and better suit the students.

Interim/ Benchmark
An interim or benchmark is an assessment that is done periodically though out the school year. For example, at the end of a six weeks. This assessment is used to track students learning progress and to see if they are on the path of being successful on future assessments.

Summative
A summative assessment is an assessment that is used to evaluate students knowledge at the end of a specific period time. It is usually done at the end of a book, unit, or project. They are used to determine whether or not student understood and learned all that they should have. Summative assessments are also sometimes used to be factored into a students grade.

A performance assessment is a way to assess students on how they perform on a specific task rather than how they answer pre-made questions on a quiz or test.

A diagnostic assessment is used to gather information about the students knowledge before teaching them a topic. This is a way to gage what each student knows or does not know. Teachers then use that information to create or modify how they present content.
