GMOs Teagan O'Brien
CONCERNS :warning:
-
No labels :forbidden:
The US doesn't require that companies label their GMOs, so most companies don't. This makes it so that people don't know what they're eating.
-
-
Harmful to insects
Non-threatening insects can be killed by the pesticides implanted in GMO. This would cause a decrease in populations of butterfly and other insects
-
-
-
-
CLAIM: GMOs will be bad for the environment and the surrounding plant life, because plants around the GMOs could be effected by them, making the environment less natural
EVIDENCE:"Genetically modified foods could potentially cause damage to other organisms in the ecosystems where they are grown. If these organisms are killed off, it leads to a loss of biodiversity in the environment while also putting other organisms at risk by creating an unstable ecosystem."(Pros And Cons Of Genetically Modified Foods)
counterclaim (Katie T) How many plants are being destroyed? If it is just a few, then why does it matter?
COUNTERARGUMENT(Teagan): The decrease and increase of one species could upset multiple environments.
Benefit
-
CLAIM: The fact that GMOs are resistant to insects is beneficial because then we have more food and less crops being destroyed.
EVIDENCE:"A biotechnology company introduces a new strain of tomato plant that produces a natural pesticide, making it resistant to the beetle. By switching to this new strain, you could avoid both the beetle and the chemical pesticides traditionally needed to fight it." (learn. Genetics).
counterclaim (Katie T) The food might be to much, and then you wouldn't have enough room for other crops.
COUNTERARGUMENT: But if you have a lot of left over food, farmers wouldn't need to plant more crops because they're already making a lot of money of the GMOs they have already grown.
