Formative
Definition: Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.
Think-Pair-Share: A collaborative learning strategy in which students work together to solve a problem or answer a question about an assigned reading. This technique requires students to think individually about a topic or answer to a question; and share ideas with classmates.
Exit Ticket: A question that is posed to all students prior to class ending. Students write their answer on a card or piece of paper and hand it in as they exit.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmarks are used to evaluate where students are in their learning process and determine whether they are on track to performing well on future assessments.
STAAR: A series of standardized tests used in Texas public primary and secondary schools to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level.
MAP: A computerized adapted test which helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child's academic growth.
Summative
Definition: The goal of a summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. These are often high stakes, which means they are high in point value.

Performance
Definition: A form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.

Diagnostic
Definition: A form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. This form of pre-assessment is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and and to guide lesson and curriculum planning.
Running Record: A way to assess a student's reading process by systematically evaluating a student's oral reading and identifying pattern errors.
KWL Chart: A graphic organizer designed to organize what students' already know, what they want to know, and what they learn.
