GMOs By Ava Mohror
CONCERNS :forbidden:
Life Risk
Research has shown that some GMOs contain chemicals that can increase the probability of tumors and other health problems.
CITATION~ “. . .that eating GMOs can increase chances of developing tumors, such as in the lungs, breasts or colon. . .” (Livestrong).

Unfair Company Rules
Companies that use GMO in their products do not have to tell you whether or not GMO is in the product or not.
People do not know what they are eating if they can't see that GMO is being used. This can lead to dangerous reactions to food that may be in the product.
Can Be Bad For Health
CITATION~ “These foods may actually lose nutritional content in the process of altering their genetic makeup” (Symptom Find).
When foods contain GMOs, people don't necessarily what foods are being combined to make the food more advanced. This could mean someone who is allergic to peanuts could end up eating a food that contains peanuts because it has been genetically modified.

BENEFITS :check:
GMOs Perfect Imperfections in Crops
Insect Resistant- GMOs are used on crops to kill or injure bugs that usually eat the plants. This helps farmers because they are getting more crops and making more money. This has replaced using pesticides (which can be very harmful to the people consuming the crop).
STATISTIC~ 88% Corn, 94% Soy, and 97% Sugar beets have GMOs in them to improve minor imperfections.
Prevent Bruising- Bruising is a big problem for potatoes, apples, bananas, and so many more crops. GMOs are used to help prevent bruising and toughening the skin of these crops. they last longer and it has reduced the amount of plants that are being thrown away/wasted.
Different Ways GMO Helps the World
Can Thrive in New Locations- Corn is a very common crop all over the world. However, lots of crops cannot thrive in places were droughts are happening or it is too cold/hot. GMOs are used on crops like corn to make them to be able to survive with little water and salt resistant. Crops that are salt resistant can be grown in salt water but still thrive.
STATISTIC~ 500,000 children around the world go blind because they are not getting enough vitamins.

Can Address World Hunger
“Genetically engineering food could help feed the 800 million undernourished people in the world” (Should the U.S. Support...).
STATISTIC~ GMOs have been used on salmon so that they can grow faster with 25% less food. This means that all the fish that they do not need to feed to salmon can be feed to people who need it.
If people can put fish in farms instead of having to catch them in the wild, there are several benefits. The first is that farmers will have total control over how many fish they are breeding and catching. They won't have to worry about how many fish they will catch because they are already right there. Also, pollution and habitat loss plays a major factor in the loss of salmon production. Fish farms give protection to the fish.
CLAIM for BENEFIT
A major benefit from using GMOs is that scientists use GMOs to increase the amount of Vitamin A in corn and this corn is called golden rice. Golden rice is helpful because 500,000 children around the world go blind every year from lack of nutrients. Using GMOs to induce more nutrients into foods can make this statistic decrease.
COUNTERCLAIM: Although GMOs such as golden rice could be beneficial towards parts of the world that are in need of food, it would take a while before GMOs would totally spread and there would be no more hunger throughout the world. Even then, there will probably still be people who are against GMOs. How will we be able to convince them otherwise and be able to address this problem in a timely manner?

CLAIM for CONCERN
Some GMOs that are used in foods can increase risk to different health problems and tumors. For example an article from Livestrong states, “. . .that eating GMOs can increase chances of developing tumors, such as in the lungs, breasts or colon. . .” This shows that though GMOs are made to help us, they can be harming us even more.
COUNTERCLAIM: While these problems are concerning and should be worried about, these diseases can easily be cured with modern day medicines and technology used in hospitals and places for care. Also, with the fast advancement that is happening every day with GMOs, these problems could easily be solved and are probably being solved as we speak.
