GMOs
Concerns
Companies don't have to tell people if the food has been genetically modified.“Currently, companies do not have to tell consumers if they use genetically modified ingredients” (Should the U.S. Support...).
Statistic:
95% of the nation's sugar beets, 94% of the soybeans, 90% of the cotton and 88% of the feed corn, in the U.S are GMO.
May cause allergies
(have allergens)“BT toxin, designed to kill pests that eat crops, caused allergies and other responses” (Genetically Modified Foods).
Statistic:
The BT in crops kills the insect that eats it almost 100% of the time. Bacillus thuringiensis is the full name for this insecticide and it is a bacteria.
Concerned about health“Some argue that people who fill their diet with GMOs will be at an increased risk of toxicity and that eating GMOs can increase chances of developing tumors, such as in the lungs, breasts or colon, according to a 2013 study published in Annals of Agriculture and Environmental Medicine” (pros and cons of GMO food).

Benifits
GMOs can help world hunger because GM crops can be produced faster for less money.“One of the major advantages of GMOs is that they help increase the production rate of crops, which can have a significant impact in countries faced with food shortages and famine” (pros and cons of GMO food).
Statistics:
815 Million people do not have enough food each day. This means that 1 of 9 people in the world do not have access to enough food.
Approximately 3.1 million children die each year from malnutrition and 500,000 children go blind every year due to lack of nutrients.
Health“Genetic modifications can put in more vitamins and minerals into the food chain, helping everyone have a healthier overall diet” (Genetically Modified Food Pros and Cons List).
Statistic:
We need Vitamin A for healthier skin, immune systems, and vision. Golden rice has vitamin A which will help prevent problems and help our skin, vision, and help keep a strong immune system.
Resists harmful insects that could pass down disease.“Genetic engineering can also make plants that resist harmful insects and diseases” (Should the U.S. Support...).

Claim:
One major concern of GMOs is that since they are not required to label if the foods are GMO someone could unknowingly eat a GM food that had something they were allergic to in it. GMO is where they take genes from other things and add it to a food. They could combine a food that someone is allergic to and something they aren't and they would never know until they had an allergic reaction.
Counterclaim (Reina H.): What are some certain companies that don't label their foods? A lot of companies don't label their foods because it would cost more money to do so. Is there a way that would be more cost efficient? Do you know any other reasons as to why they don't label their foods?
“Currently, companies do not have to tell consumers if they use genetically modified ingredients” (Should the U.S. Support...).
Counterargument:
Many companies don't label there foods and seeing companies that do label there foods are very rare. Labeling there foods is just an inconvenience and it would cost them some money to label there packaging but in the long term it wouldn't cost that much money. One reason companies don't label there foods is that they are afraid if it says that it has GMOs that more people wont want to buy them.
Claim:
One benefit of GMOs is that they can help solve world hunger and save peoples lives because of faster production and cheaper costs.
"Nearly a million children die every year because they are weakened by Vitamin A deficiencies and an additional 350,000 go blind. Golden rice, said Time, will be a godsend for the half of humanity that depends on rice for its major staple. Merely eating this rice could prevent blindness and death" (Can GMOs Help End World Hunger?)
Counterclaim (Reina H.): How would these GMO foods be so strong that they could prevent blindness and death? Would people who live in undernourished countries even be able to afford these GMO foods because if their country is struggling and poor they probably won't have enough money to buy them.
Counter Argument:
It isn't a guarantee that it will make a huge impact on the world but it will help people get the necessary vitamins and minerals that they need. They will be grown to be less costly so it would be cheaper than any other options that they have.
