Assessments

Formative
Formative assessments give the teacher a way to gauge what the students know throughout a lesson or unit. It is a low stakes form of assessment, meaning it will not necessarily impact a student's grade.
Examples
-
After a lesson, asking students to hold up a 1 if they understand, a 2 if they're not sure, and a 3 if they are completely lost.
Interim/Benchmark
Interim/benchmark assessments are used to see if students are progressing in the right direction. These assessments also tell whether or not the student will do well on future assessments such as the STAAR test.

MAP assessments
-
Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessments are used as pre-tests before a unit/lesson to see how much the students already know about the topic, their strengths and weaknesses, and how much they remember from prior instruction.

Performance
Performance assessments are an alternative to the traditional tests where students are asked to perform a task instead of taking a pen and paper test.
-
Summative
Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit to see if students have gained the necessary knowledge. These are high stakes tests that have a high point value.
