4) How does this pertain to his audience? The Daily is known to be a podcast that reports news daily, and this is what his audience expects. So to speak to the topic of labeling in America, Barbaro specifically chooses a news report that talks about the deportion of an illegal immigrant. Thus, he is playing to his audience's expectations, but using the freedom he has as host to choose the topic.
5) 44% of his audience is democratic, 39% independent, 13% republican, 22% conservative, 35% moderate, 36% liberal (Pew Research Center).
So it is evident that the majority of them would feel negatively towards deportation issues already.
6) So to appeal to his audience, he is reporting controversial news; but to get them to come to message he wants them to understand, he compounds the objective news reporting with somber music and a "cliff-hanging" sequence of events.
7) What does this do? This evokes the listener to feel sympathy for Carlos, to feel that the government is in the wrong.
9) How does this emotion affect the audience? For the audience to feel sympathy for Carlos is for them to internally recognize that there is something wrong with his deportation, that there is a problem in how we are treating these individuals in the U.S.
8) Why is this emotion important? This invocation of emotion is important because it is Barbaro's tactic to subtly bias the podcast. His news reporting is expected to be nonpartisan so he cannot show bias in the content he is reporting.
10) How does this get the audience to understand the message? Having the audience recognize that the U.S. is mistreating illegal immigrants is to expose the audience the oppression these people are facing just because they are labeled as illegal aliens.
