Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is an assessment used to check for student understanding at any point in the lesson. Often times the results of formative assessments are used to adjust instruction for the rest of the six weeks, or year, to help students succeed to a higher level on summative assessments.
Exit Tickets: At the end of a lesson of the day, often times teachers give students an exit ticket to place in a "I understand", "I need more help", or "I understand but might need more practice" bins to see how they understood the content.

Goal Setting: Students can set goals for themselves as a form of a formative assessment. The teacher will hold conferences with each students checking in about their goal, how it is going, or what else they need to work on.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment used to test students ability to complete the task rather than select the answer from an answer choice.
Open-ended/Response Questions: Open-ended responses are a type of assessment to show what the student can do outside of matching their work to choices. Students have to do all of the work and make a final product on their own.

Portfolios: Portfolios can serve as an assessment as a collection of student completed work. Students complete different performance assessments which teachers place into their portfolio to show their different abilities.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is an assessment used to gather information/data about where students are in their learning about content area topics. The teacher is able to see how to best fit their educational needs from this assessment.
Pre-assessment: This is used in the classroom as a tool to see where students are in their learning about a content area. Teachers use this information to see where they need to take their lesson .
K-W-L Charts: K-W-L Charts are used often times in the classroom to see what students already know about a topic, what they want to learn, and after the lesson what they learned.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An interim/benchmark is an assessment used to see where the student is at in their academics. This assessment is often used to improve student success in their future education.
TEK Checks: TEK checks are a type of benchmarks done once or twice during the school year. These assessments are used in preparation to the state testing at the end of the year. These assessments are used to see where students are in accordance to a higher-stake test.
MAPS Testing: MAPS testing is done at the beginning, middle, and the end of the year. Students take an online test that gathers data about where they are in certain areas of content. As the year progresses teachers can view the change in student growth.
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is an assessment used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit, at the end of the six weeks, or a state test at the end of the year. This assessment usually has a high grade value.
District Assessments: At the end of each six weeks students take a district assessment. This is where everything they have learned throughout the six weeks is tested.
State Assessments: At the end of grades 3-5, students take a state assessment called the STAAR test. Students apply everything they have learned throughout the year on this exam.
