Formative
Definition- assessments given throughout the lesson to check for comprehension, learning needs, or academic progress
Example- At the end of class a teacher could give an exit ticket that has a prompt about what was covered in the lesson for that day.
Example- Students could write a journal entry based off a prompt that the teacher provided that was related to the content that was taught in the lesson that day.

Interim/Benchmark
Defintion- an assessment that is given periodically throughout the school year to measure progress and baseline achievement data
Example- A teacher would administer a reading benchmark mandated by the ISD at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and at the end of the year.
Example- A teacher would administer a math interim mandated by the ISD to measure the progress towards achieving state standards.

Diagnostic
Definition- an assessment that is used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning
Example- A pre-test would be an example because it is determining if the students are having any difficulties and can guide the lesson planning.
Example- A teacher could administer a running record testing a child's Fountas and Pinnell levels as a diagnostic assessment.
