Memory:
In “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”, the main character, Quail, goes to Rekal, Incorporated because he wants memories of a trip to Mars implanted into his memory. To Quail, the memories of going to Mars will equate to the experience of actually going. This cooperation makes money off of the concept that one does not need to experience something first hand. They advertise that artificial memories are sufficient in composing the events of a person’s life. McClane, the Rekal agent, tells Quail that the memories they implant are better than real memories because nothing about them is forgotten over time. Real memories are imperfect, but so are human beings. Memories are advertised here to be the bedrock of an authentic human experience; however, these memories are not based on actual experiences.
