Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are methods teachers use to conduct evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress.
Exit Ticket: Students write down an accurate interpretation of the main idea behind the lesson taught that day.
3-2-1 Countdown: Students respond with 3 things they didn't know before, 2 things that surprised them about the topic learned, and 1 thing they want to start doing with what they have learned.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are assessments educators use to evaluate where students are in their learning process and to determine whether they are on track to perform well on future assessments.
STAAR Test: A standardized test by the state of Texas that assess students' knowledge learned achievements in a certain grade level.
Final Exams: Exams students take to assess their knowledge of the content learned over the course of a semester.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate a students' learning at the end of an instructional unit. These assessments are often high stakes, which means they have a high point value.
Midterm/Final Exam: Exams students take to assess their knowledge of the content learned over a period of time or semester.
Final Project: Students create a report to display what the student has learned about the whole unit.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessment is also known as alternative or authentic assessment. It is a form of testing that requires a student to perform a task rather than answer questions from a test.
Debates: Classroom debates teaches students about varied viewpoints and opinions. Students must have comprehension of the material in order to participate in class debates.
Presentations: Students are required to present, teach, or report information, or persuade others with information they have researched.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are a form of pre-assessment that allows teachers to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. This is used to help the teacher guide lessons and curriculum planning to their students' needs.
Pre-Assessment Quiz: A quiz taken before the lesson is taught to see what students know and don't know. This may also help determine any misconceptions or concerns.
