Summative: Assessments that evaluate students' knowledge of a unit, or course. Summative assessments grades carry more weight than formative assessments.
Final Exams: Cumulative end of course exams that assess student knowledge of the content taught over an extended period of time.

Diagnostic: Pre-assessments that help determine where students stand in terms of knowledge and understanding. This is also indicative of any misconceptions that the student might hold and is useful in helping teachers plan for instruction that meets the needs of his or her students.
Running Records: Assessments that track error patterns in a student's reading to determine their reading level.
KWL: A short assignment that requires students to write what they (K)now, (W)ant to know, and (L)earned about a particular topic.
Performance: An assessment that requires students to perform a task in order to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, and proficiency.

Formative: Formative Assessments are varying methods gaining insight into the progress of student comprehension throughout a lesson, unit, or course. This is a valuable source of feedback and is useful in determining how to modify instruction in order to maximize student learning.
Four Corners: Students will begin by standing in the middle of the room, while the teacher reads aloud a series of questions. Students will them move to the corner of the room that best represents what they think is the answer.
Exit tickets: Short summaries of the day's lesson where students describe what they have learned and communicate any questions that they still might hold.
