Formative
Definition: An assessment that monitors student learning to help with providing feedback and modify lessons to focus on areas where the student body is struggling most. These assessments are considered low stakes and mainly help the teacher assess where they need to go in terms of their teaching.
Exit Ticket: Small piece of paper that the student turns in before they walk out the door. The exit ticket can focus on the main focus of the lesson. It is to show how effective the lesson on the particular day was.
Classroom Polls: The poll lets the students answer quickly and provide instant feedback for the teacher. This assessment is great for students who are shy and don't like speaking up. An example app would be Kahoot!
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An assessment that teachers give to see where students are at in their learning and to see if they are on their way to performing well on future assessments, such as standardized tests. They fall in between formative and summative assessment and focus on state standards in education.
End of Course Exams: An assessment that is created by previous results of standardized tests. The teachers will look at what was missed most and choose questions that are similar.
Practice STAAR Essays: Essays that teachers can give in their classes at the end of the six weeks to prepare a student for the eventual STAAR essay that they will have to complete.
Summative
Definition: An assessment that evaluates student performance after a unit, lesson, or term. It is compared to some standard or objective. Summative assessments are considered high stakes and have a high point value.
Midterm Exam: An exam that occurs in the middle of a term that shows where a student is in their learning..
Final Project: A large project that is turned in or presented at the end of a unit or term. It is generally worked on for a prolonged period of time and has multiple components that fit into the overall grade.
Performance
Definition: A form of assessment that makes a student perform an actual task or specific skill/competencies by performing or producing something.
Experiments: A performance that a student must complete to prove a hypothesis. They have to preplan, carry out, and document the results.
Research Papers: The paper is driven by the action of conducting research and paraphrasing, with proper citation. The student needs to complete these actions to construct an effective paper.
Diagnostic
Definition: This assessment allows the teacher to determine where the student is before they begin a lesson or new unit. A positive aspect of this type of assessment is that it can show a student's strengths and weaknesses in a topic, which leads to a modified plan.
Pre-tests: These tests can be multiple choice, open response, etc. As long as they occur before the unit or lesson.
KWL Chart: A chart in which students break down three columns: what they already know, what they want to know, and what they learned.
