Formative
Definition: The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. Generally low-stakes. They help target what students need work on.
Exit Ticket: Exit tickets are small pieces of paper or cards that students deposit as they leave the classroom. Students write down an accurate interpretation of the main idea behind the lesson taught that day.
Classroom Polls: Polls let students give responses quickly and accurately. A silent poll is perfect for those “shy” students who have trouble speaking up. These are also a quick way to check understanding using mobile technology
Summative
Definition: The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value

Performance
Definition: Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Open-ended or extended response exercises are questions or other prompts that require students to explore a topic orally or in writing. Students might be asked to describe their observations from a science experiment, or present arguments an historic character would make concerning a particular proposition.
Portfolios are selected collections of a variety of performance-based work. A portfolio might include a student's "best pieces" and the student's evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of several pieces
Diagnostic
Definition: is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and prior to instruction. It is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning.
Graphic Organizer: Can be done in groups or independent. Students put the topic in the middle and branch off details of what they know about the topic
KWL Chart: Administered before a lesson. Students fill out the chart; K- what the student knows already about the topic, W- what the student wants to know, and the L- what the student learned during the lesson.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition educators use to (1) evaluate where students are in their learning progress and (2) determine whether they are on track to performing well on future assessments
