Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is the process of gathering evidence of student learning and providing feedback. It allows adjustment of instruction strategies to enhance achievement. Assessments are low stakes and have little to no grade value.
Quiz: A short quiz can be given to see what students learned from the lesson to see if teacher should reteach or can continue to the next lesson.
Class Discussion: Students will discuss as a group what they know about the subject so that the teacher can assess the information they know so that she can adjust her lesson.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments help with evaluating the student's learning progress and if they are on track to perform well on future assessments.
TEMI: Testing given to students to show student achievement in Math.
STAAR: Given to students to assess the students' knowledge that they have learned/achieved in their grade level.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments is a form of testing that requires the students to perform a task instead of selecting an answer from a prepared test/list.
Presentation: Students will create a presentation of the topic that they just learned. They must gather information, write it on the presentation along with an illustration that best supports the main topic. They must rehearse and prepare to present.
Project: Students will create a project that demonstrates their understanding of the lesson. For example, our second grade class will learn about food chains. Upon completing the unit the students will be able to create a food chain line and explain: producers, primary/secondary consumers, prey, predator, herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. The student will demonstrate mastery by explaining how the food chain works along with the vocabulary they learned.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessment is given at the end of a large chunk of learning. Indicates progress. Assessments are high stakes and have a high point value
Research Project: At the end of teaching a subject's lesson the teacher can require the students to put the information they learned into a research project to assess that they have mastered the lesson.
Final Exams:Can be given at the end of the semester to assess the student's knowledge they should have learned throughout the semester.
Diagnostic
Definition:Diagnostic assessment is giving the students a pre-assessment that the teacher can use to gauge the student's knowledge, weaknesses, strengths, and skills before instruction on material is given.
Pre-test: Students can take a pre-test (before the lesson) that will have questions that the students will be able to answer after they learn the lesson. This will allow the teacher to see what they don't know and just as important, what they do know. If the teacher can see things that majority of the class understands then she can adjust the lesson to spend less time on certain parts to concentrate on parts that they showed struggle in on the pre-test.
KWL Chart: Students will use this chart to write what they know, what they want to know, and what they learn. It is a great way to have them tell you what they know already about the subject.
