Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is any formal or informative assessment that is conducted by the teacher in order to asses the students learning throughout a lesson and to adjust further instruction.
Exit Ticket: You can gather information about how well your students learned from today's lesson by having them complete an exit ticket. The exit ticket can require students to write down everything they learned today or it can be a three question multiple choice ticket that you created.
Teacher Observation: These observations help teachers to gather evidence of student learning to adjust instructional planning.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessment is a form of testing where students perform a task to demonstrate a skill and show what they can do with their knowledge.
Debates: Classroom debates teach students about varied viewpoints and opinions. You can divide your class in half and have them debate a topic.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessment is any assessment given at the end of an instructional unit to evaluate student learning.
Student Portfolio: Collection of student work that exhibits their efforts, progress, and achievements throughout an instructional unit.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to measure your student's growth and progress towards academic milestones. Schools, districts, and states can use the data collected from these assessments to measure academic progress.
Map: This is an assessment that monitors students academic progress. The data is used to help teachers identify a student's strengths and weaknesses.
STARR: State assessment that is taken at the end of the school year to show how well students mastered the grade level content.
Diagnostics
Definition: An assessment given at the beginning of a course or unit/topic. The data is used to see what students already know about the topic or course.
Non-graded pre-tests: Students take a multiple choice pre-test about the topic you are about to teach.
Knowledge Survey: Have students take a survey at the beginning of your lesson to see what they know and do not know about the topic.
