Rationality must be acquired through training and practice.
People believe themselves to be rational, and blame poor decisions on external factors.
Pericles said "understand that, like everyone, you think you are rational, but you are not"
"it is impossible to not have our feelings somehow involved in what we think"
Rational people consciously subtract their emotions from their decision-making process, irrational people base decisions on these emotions.
When emotions rule, decisions will be poor, shortsighted, and inconsistent.
Developing models and frameworks helps.
We default to irrationality.
The difference between getting what you want and not is the degree to which you override your natural irrationality.
Develop an irrational fear that you are moving forward in irrationality.
Two parts of each person's brain - the upper-level logical and the lower-level emotional - and they battle.
Action Steps
Conscious decision making - thought out in advance
Do not rely on "your gut" or "willpower"
If someone without my emotional attachments and with the knowledge to solve the problem looked at this problem, how would they solve it?
Tell a Friend Solution
What would we tell a friend if they came to us with this problem/question/decision?
Ask people for help!
We cannot ever truly see ourselves objectively.
Ask for the opinions of others, especially those who have already done it or have the skills necessary.
If you can find people who can explain their logic to you, this is better.
This emotional thinking includes things like anxieties (the task will be hard/will cause stress/will take up too much time/etc) and fear of failure
