Formative
Definition: an assessment given during a unit that is used to gauge student understanding and adjust teacher's plans
Windshield Check: Students will mark their windshields with mud (meaning they do not understand), bugs (meaning they get it for the most part but still have questions, or clear (meaning they understand fully).
Quick Write: At the end of the lesson, students write for 2-3 minutes about the takeaway points from what they learned. Teacher could also provide an open-ended question for writing.
Diagnostic
Definition: an assessment given before the start of a unit to assess the prior knowledge, levels, and misconceptions that students have in order to best accommodate student needs
Carousel Brainstorm: In groups, students move around the room from station to station. Each station has a topic that students must put down whatever they know pertaining to that topic.
K-W-L Chart: As a class, students fill out what they (K)now about a topic, what they (W)ant to know, and then after the unit what they (L)earned.
Performance
Definition: an assessment based on students performing a task rather than answering questions on a test
Video: Have students create a video of them reenacting literature or drama. (EX: Students could perform the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet.)

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: an assessment given to students in order to gauge how well they will do on specific future testing like the STAAR

Practice Essays: Have students write an essay with the same parameters as a STAAR essay and give them a grade based on the STAAR rubric.
Summative
Definition: an assessment given at the end of a unit to assess student mastery of targeted objectives
