Definition: The goal of formative assessments are to monitor what students are learning. Formative assessments are used to identify a students strengths and weakness and help target areas that need work. Feedback is provided by instructors to then help improve the students learning. They are considered low stakes and how no point value.

Concept Maps - Can be used to show a student understanding of a specific topic.

Think-Pair-Share - A strategy students can use. There are 3 steps to Think-Pair-Share.


1) Think individually
2) Find a partner
3) Share with partner

Definition: The goal of summative assessments are to evaluate what the student has learned at the end of a unit or lesson. This can be done with tests, quizzes, papers, and final projects. They are often considered high staked assessment and have high point value.

STAAR Test - A Texas standardized test given at any grade level. The test is used to see what students know and learned.

Final Projects - Can be used at the end of a unit or lesson. Students will be able to create a project that relates to the lesson.

Definition: Interim assessments are one of two things. 1) Evaluate where students are in their learning process. 2) Decided whether they are on track to doing well on future assessments. Interim assessments are done throughout the school year.

Final Exam - A test given at the end of a semester.

Definition: Diagnostic assessments are test that help teachers and students tell how much they know and don't know about an upcoming topic. From there teachers can plan their lessons to help meet the students needs.

Pre-Tests - Test given before a lesson or unit to see what the student knows prior to the lesson.

Surveys - Questions asked before the lesson or unit. These question can then be used by the teacher to see what student already know.

Definition: Performance assessments are a type of testing that has students perform a task or tasks instead of picking/selecting an answer from a list.

Presentations - Information given to you in a concise way. Often includes the important information that you need to know.

Exhibits - Exhibits are used to show off work that has been completed.

Papers/Essays - Written article about what was taught.
