Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic (Including ESL students and students with special needs)
Provide additional resources - Resources should be clear and simple about plants. Resources should include images about plants so that students can understand easily.
Clear And Concise Directions: This is a good general strategy to increase understanding. It improves student' ability to correctly complete pre-assessments
Peer tutoring may be done as a structured and routine procedure or on an as needed basis, depending on the student needs and peer tutors.
Graphic Organizer- Graphic organizers guide learners’ thinking as they fill in and build upon a visual map or diagram.Through visuals, ELL students and students with special needs can learn effectively. Graphic organizer should include simple words for low level students.
Flash Cards- Using Quizlet flashcards, let students explain simply with some words about plants. After pre-assessment, give some feedback for them.
Students who have some knowledge about the topic
Grouping - Students of similar instructional levels are placed together. Let them work together. It allows students to have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, their peers in a way that lets them feel comfortable contributing.
Peer Feedback- Peer feedback provides students more opportunities to learn from each other. After students finish to fill in K-W-L charts, let students work together to check check each other's work and give comments to the peer partner. Peer feedback can be in the form of corrections, opinions, suggestions, ideas to each other.
Group Presentation- After watch video about plants, let students summarize their ideas and then let them present their summarizing with their group members. Presentation skills help students to communicate more effectively.
Students who answered most questions correctly
Peer Support- Place students in pair with high level student and low-level student. High level students support the low level students. Low level students work with high level students and finish pre-assessment together.
Using Quilt, Let students answer the quiz about plants before the lesson. This quiz will determine what knowledge students might already know about topic.
Providing more challenging worksheet- Provide more difficult problems and make up some originals ones for high level students.
Study Sheet- Let them do the study sheet and write a summary of each key vocabulary about plants.

Steps for Pre-Assessment- 1. Set up goals and differentiate instruction 2. Develop appropriate pre-assessment 3. Conduct pre-assessment the day before starting a new unit of learning 4. Analyze the data
Pre-assessments plays an important role in our ability to differentiate instruction. I can administer pre-assessments in order to understand what students know and are able to do before I begin instruction.
Once the assessments are graded and handed back, have the students record their pre-assessment scores in their Student Data Tracking Binders and color in their scores on their graphs (also included in my Student Data Tracking Binders).
The pre-assessment data is used to plan my teaching and group my students. I can group students with similar strengths and weaknesses so that I can effectively emphasize particular concepts to various groups. Throughout the learning and teaching, I can also give quick formative assessments to gauge their understanding of my teaching.
Technology -Using Technology, teachers can access information on student progress and learning throughout the school day, which allows them to adapt instruction to personalize learning or intervene to address particular learning shortfalls. If we use technology for pre-assessment, we can teach students more effectively.
