Respiration and Microorganisms
Respiration Description
NOT breathing
Occurs in mitochondria
Produces energy
Two types: Aerobic and anaerobic
Aerobic Respiration
Occurs with oxygen
Word Equation: Glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
Chemical Equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + 38ATP
More steps than anaerobic respiration but more efficient
Immobilised Yeast
Why?
So you do not get the flavour
Yeast can be reused
Save money
Doesn't use up the yeast but still gets ethanol + carbon dioxide and water
Anaerobic Respiration
Occurs without oxygen
Word Equation: Glucose = Lactic Acids + energy
Chemical Equation: C6H12O6 = 2 lactic acids + 2ATP
Less efficient but get the energy faster
Fermentation = anaerobic respiration in fungi especially yeast = glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide
Bread Making = fermentation in yeast
