Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are performed while learning. Their purpose is for both the student and the teacher to get a better feel for the student's level of understanding. :
Group Discussions: Students are asked open-ended questions to initiate discussion about the content. This tells the teacher much about student learning and understanding of basic concepts.
Think-Pair-Share: Students are asked a question and write down their answers. Then they are placed in pairs to discuss their responses. Teachers are able to circulate and listen to various discussions which allows them to gain valuable insight into levels of understanding.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are given periodically (e.g., at the end of every quarter or as frequently as once per month) throughout a school year to establish baseline achievement data and measure progress toward a standard or set of academic standards and goals.
Common Assessments: Students are given these assessments periodically to determine/explain how the students are progressing towards grade level standards.
STAAR: Texas standardized tests are given to assess students' knowledge learned and achievements in grade level.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit. These assessments have a high point value.

Final Projects: Students are asked to explore topic(s) that have been discussed in class after a whole unit in greater depth than is permitted in class to assess what they have learned.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are used to gather evidence about what students can do with their knowledge. More so, it allows the students to apply knowledge to solve a problem or demonstrate a skill.

Presentations: Students can implement a presentation regarding a certain topic through either providing information, teaching a skill, or persuading others to demonstrate a skill and apply their own knowledge.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to determine students' level of knowledge, skills, and understandings at the beginning of a course, grade level, unit and/or lesson. They test the students on what they already know.
Pre-tests: Teachers can give pre-tests before implementing a lesson to understand what students already know and what they do not know to. This serves teachers as a guide on what he/she should include within the lesson to meet student needs.
Surveys: Students are asked different questions and the teacher is able to identify and correct misconceptions. Additionally, they can identify individual and class strengths and weaknesses.
