Formative
Definition: The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.
Think-Pair-Share
This is one of the many formative assessment strategies that is simple for teachers to use. The instructor asks a question, and students write down their answers. Students are then placed in pairs to discuss their responses. Teachers are able to move around the classroom and listen to various discussions. It lets them gain valuable insight into levels of understanding.
One-Minute Papers
One-minute papers are usually done at the end of the day. Students can work individually or in groups here. They must answer a brief question in writing. Typical questions posed by teachers center around:

Summative
Definition: The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Exams: the students are asked to take a test at the end of a section, chapter, unit, theme, etc. to demonstrate what they know.
Essay: students are asked to write an original selection. There are many written forms that teachers can use to get students to write.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim assessment is administered at different intervals of instruction in order to receive data to track their progression
District Assessments: Schools can create their own exams based on the TEKS in order to see the progression of their students through out the school year. text
STAAR: is standardized tests used in Texas public primary and secondary schools to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level.
Performance
Definition:a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Debate: A debate in the classroom is one form of performance-based learning that teaches students about varied viewpoints and opinions.
In class performances: Dramatic performances are one kind of collaborative activities that can be used as a performance-based assessment. Students can create, perform, and/or provide a critical response.
Diagnostic
Definition: is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.
Course with group work: Instructor surveys students prior experiences with group work and their attitudes towards group work, or conducts early term self-assessment
Gap Closing: These activities are designed to uncover they typical problems students have with a specific topic.Works great with grammar or spelling
