Testing for cations :
- Dip the nichrome wire loop into dilute hydrochloric acid and place in the blue (non-luminous) bunsen flame to clean it as you don't know what compounds or elements it has touched which can affect your results.
- Dip the loop into the dilute hydrochloric acid again and then the compound you are going to test.
- Place the wire into the bunsen flame and observe the colour change.
- Note the colour change.
- Repeat with the other compounds.
