The Kingdom of This World
Revolution-Oppression Cycle
Examples: (Carpentier 56, 57)
From revolution of the oppressed, the oppressed often become the oppressors.
Oppressed people often find/ hold on to some sense of hope that eventually inspires them to revolt.
To what extent are oppression and revolution cyclic?
American Revolution- colonists fought to relieve the Brits hold on them. Soon after the revolution those very people became the oppressors of multiple races and women.
Oppression: "Prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority, control, or power; tyranny; exploitation" - From OED
Revolution: Change, upheaval.(OED).
Change
"The only permanent thing is change" True. But, how does change influence a particular motive in some. And, is do changes repeat themselves (so are they really changes)?
The black changed into the whites after revolution.
Religion and Beliefs
Magical Realism = it is magical but perceived as reality. Alters sense of reality/ western mindset of reality.
Latin-American culture
Spiritual beliefs of African religion mixed with monotheistic religion. What happens when you mix two completely different beliefs/ religions. How do you make sens of the world? Do you combine the two? Or, only believe one?
Religion bringing the masses together to be able to revolt= slave songs in American. Slaves would often sing songs to communicate certain things = wade in the water. (Carpentier 52)
Colonial vs Post Colonial perspective
Carpentier is writing in a post colonial world. How does this shape the content of the novel. Thusly, how do you explain and support both the white Europeans and the black revolutionaries?
Transitional stage: Haiti was neglected by the rest of society = cycle of oppressed
Magical Realism and how he uses it
It is almost used as a catalyst for hope. Blacks often used these stories to make sense of their world and also inspire hope. == Mackandal "flying" (Carpentier 33)
Hope = the key to get out of oppression? Or is it mas hope? Learned helplessness? - Handmaid's tale.
"Song of Solomon"
aspect of flight and song singing
Mackandal flies and so does Milkman
Songs= hope and communication
Slang - How did slang develop? Was it once a way to pass messages to others secretly?
