THE CELLS
Cells
Basic unit of life
Carry out 3 principal life functions
SENSIVITY
REPRODUCTION
NUTRITION
Smartest structural units of life that can function indepently
Prokaryotic cells
They do not have nucleus
The majority are single-celled organisms
Simpler and smaller than Eucaryotic
All are free living
They're not parasitic and exist independently
Contain the following structures
RIBOSOMES
GENETIC MATERIAL
CELL WALL
FLAGELLUM
Scientist try to understand what living things are made up of
The microscope help them to do that
Robert Hooke
First person to use the term cell
Parts of a cell
There are various types of cells, but all have these basic structures:
CYTOPLASM
A jelly-like substance inside the cell
GENETIC MATERIAL
Consist primaly of DNA. Gives instructions to the cell which controls activities
CELL MEMBRANE
Thin layers that cover the cell. It's made ou of lipids
Types of cells
Classified in 2 groups.
PROKARIOTIC: Genetic material floats freely throughout the cytoplasm
EUCARYOTIC: Genetic material is located inside the nucleus
