Joints
synovial joints
planar joints
flat articular surfaces, gliding (between metacarpals and carpals)
hinge joints
cylinder, trough, flexion and extension (humerus and ulna space where the notch on the ulna is attached to the humerus.
pivot joint
ulna attaching to the radius at the superior portion sleeve (joint) and rounded bone, rotation.
condylar joint
oval, articular surfaces, medial lateral axis and anterior posterior axis the metacarpals attaching to the phalanges.
saddle joint
articular surfaces on both conclave and convex, medial lateral axis, adduction and abduction, flexion and extension.Ex: metacarpal attaching to the trapezium.
ball and socket joint
scapula attaching to the head of the humerus, rotation, adduction and abduction, flexion and extension.
-
fibrous joints: found where bones have close contact with one another-held to one another by dense regular connective tissue.
sutures
"seams" (bones tightly bound together by fibrous tissue) only occurring on the skull: sagittal suture, coronal suture, lambdoid suture and squamous suture. These help knit the bones together so the skull can expand during childhood.During middle age the fibrous tissue ossifies and the bones fuse together.
gomphosis: a peg in socket joint, immovable.
Bone
-
long bone: longer than wide w/ a shaft and two distinct ends. Long bones include fingers and toes among more obvious bones like the humerus.
components of long bone
proximal epiphysis
covered w/ a thin layer of hyaline cartilage called the articular cartilage. This end contains the head of the long bone.
-
distal epiphysis
enables bone to move together without grinding on each other. Inferior to the proximal ephiphysis and the diaphysis.
-
inside the long bone
-
-
spongy bone
also called trebecular bone due to the trabeculae inside is a sponge looking material deep to compact bone.
