Treatment
Perform venesection in younger patients to keep HCT down for give hydroxycarbamide for higher risk patients

In secondary polycythaemia, treat tumour, stop smoking or give oxygen in hypoxia

Definition
Polycythaemia is an increase in Hb, PCV (packed cell volume) or RCC

Relative Polycythaemia = affects middle aged obese men, associated with smoking, increased alcohol intake and hypertension. PCV is normal but plasma volume is decreased
Aetiology

Secondary cause is caused by hypoxia from high altitudes, chronic lung disease, cyanotic congenital heart disease, heavy smoking
Primary cause is due to polycythaemia vera - there is a mutatin in JAK2 causing excess proliferation of RBCs, WBCs + platelets
